Am I eligible to drive a car in Japan?

【A】

If you have an International Driving Permit issued in a foreign country based on the Convention on Road Traffic (September 19, 1949 Geneva Convention), you can drive a car in Japan in accordance with Japanese laws and regulations.

You can drive a car with an international driver’s license for up to one year from the date of entry into Japan (if you leave Japan and re-enter Japan, it will be valid for one year from the date of re-entry). However, if you live in Japan, the conditions are different, so please contact the license center that has jurisdiction over your area for details.

If one year has passed since the date of entry into Japan, you cannot drive with an international driver’s license. If you plan to stay in Japan for a long period of time and drive, we recommend that you switch to a Japanese driver’s license.

If you have a driver’s license issued in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, or Taiwan, please carry a Japanese translation of your license with you in order to comply with Japanese laws and regulations. Therefore, you can drive a car etc. in Japan.

When driving a car in Japan, you must always carry a Japanese translation along with the original driver’s license.

You can drive a car with this translation for one year from the date of entry into Japan. (If you leave Japan and re-enter Japan, it will be valid for one year from the date of re-entry.) However, if a person registered in the Basic Resident Register leaves Japan and returns to Japan after staying abroad for less than three months, the conditions will be different. For details, please contact the license center that has jurisdiction over your area.

Police may ask you to show your passport while driving to check how many days have passed since you entered Japan.

If one year has passed since the date of entry into Japan, you cannot drive a car in Japan even if you attach the translation. If you plan to stay in Japan for a long period of time and drive, we recommend that you switch to a Japanese driver’s license. The Japanese translation can also be used for this license conversion procedure. For details on the conversion procedure, please contact the license center that has jurisdiction over your area.
